During the December 7, 2009, Council meeting, Councilwoman Joan Dautel was sworn in as the City of Fairborn Mayor.  Mayor Dautel had served the previous two years as Deputy Mayor after being re-elected by the citizens of Fairborn to serve another four year term on November 6, 2007, after serving a prior four-year elected term and two-year appointed term.

Having served as a Fairborn Councilwoman from December 1987 to December 1991 and Deputy Mayor from December 1991 to October 1994, Dautel is no stranger to the responsibilities of City Council. In addition, she previously served on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Board of Zoning Appeals.

In 1968, Joan graduated from Thornton Junior College in Harvey, Illinois with an Associate Arts Degree in history, health/physical education. Two years later in 1970, she received a Bachelor of Science in history/government and physical education/health from Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio. Further expanding her education, she attended Wright State University where she received a Master of Arts in history in 1975. In 1983, she completed her dissertation and received a Ph.D. in American History from Columbia Pacific University in San Rafael, California. In addition to a State of Ohio permanent teaching certificate, she also holds a Certified Athletic Administrators Certificate from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Joan has been part of the Fairborn community since 1970 when she assumed a position with the Fairborn City Schools as a health and physical education teacher at Fairborn Baker High School. Six years later in 1976, she further established her Fairborn roots by becoming a permanent resident of the community. Over the years, she has touched the lives of many Fairborn residents as a Fairborn health/ physical education and a history teacher. In 1994, she assumed the responsibilities of the first woman Athletic Director for Fairborn City Schools, an administrative position responsible for all high school and junior high sports. In addition to her responsibilities with the Fairborn City Schools, Joan served at Cedarville College as an instructional adjunct faculty member during the winter quarters of 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1996. In August 2005, she retired from the Fairborn City Schools after 35 years of service. She served as an adjunct professor of history from 2006 - 2008 at Indiana Wesleyan University through their Adult and Continuing Education program in Cincinnati.
